What is fair when it comes to AI bias? VIP network event – invite only

It’s not the algorithm behaving badly but the way in which we define fairness that determines an artificial intelligence system’s impact.

Bias is often identified as one of the major risks associated with artificial intelligence systems. Recently reported cases of known bias in AI — racism in the criminal justice system, gender discrimination in hiring — are undeniably worrisome.

The public discussion about bias in such scenarios often assigns blame to the algorithm itself. The algorithm, it is said, has made the wrong decision to the detriment of a particular group. But this claim fails to take into account the human component – that people perceive bias through the subjective lens of fairness.

How can we best define bias and fairness?

When: Wednesday 9th October

Time: 18:15 – 20:15

Blurred Lines: The Impact of AI in Business and Academia.

Who: Cambridge.ai

What: In partnership with World AI Week, Camb.ai presents Blurred Lines: The impact of AI in Business and Academia.

As AI is adopted by more businesses and researchers, it’s important to think about the impact, challenges and opportunities it brings. Hosted by Gemma Milne (freelance journalist with Forbes and the BBC, author, and co-founder of Science: Disrupt), this panel discussion will bring together Cambridge-based professionals and academics to examine such topics as: the impact of AI in both fields, how perceptions can drive or slow innovation and research translation, the ethics surrounding AI and data use, and how to best transfer intention through technology.

World AI Week is the World’s first week dedicated to AI. As the only UK event, we hope to showcase Cambridge as a world AI hub and a place where big questions can be asked. We might not be able to provide the answers, but we can promise good debate – and lots of questions.

This event will be recorded and released as a special podcast (via Science: Disrupt), so that those that cannot make it can enjoy the discussion too!
